Valdés is a coastal and mountainous region in which there are three different geographical areas: the coastal plateau with beautiful beaches, the valleys inland and the mountainous areas to the south. Each area is home to complementary customs and lifestyles. The hydrographic grid in the Valdés region is formed by two main rivers, El Esva and El Negro. Valdés is worth visiting for the beauty, diversity and wealth of the surrounding landscapes and the region's ecological interest, in which various species in danger of extinction survive. The region's capital is the town of Luarca, which is divided into different areas: old medieval quarters such as La Pescadería, La Carril and El Cambaral, which surround the harbour; and inland the 19th Century bourgeois town of Luarca, in which there are palace buildings. The vaqueiros, a group of migratory livestock farmers, found large fields in this area which were ideal for their livestock. In Braña de Aristébano a livestock festival is held on the last Sunday of July. This festival has been declared a Festival of Tourist Interest, as has La Regalina in Cadavedo.
